Presentation of report

 

On the afternoon of Wednesday 13th May 2026, a delegation from the Human Rights Commission led by the Chairperson Mr. Bernardin Renaud presented the Annual Report for the Human Rights Commission to the Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Azarel Ernesta. Mr. Renaud was accompanied by the Vice- Chairperson Mrs. Nicole Tirant-Gherardi, and Commissioners Mr. Roger Toussaint and Mrs. Elna Etienne- Kumar.

The meeting began with a presentation, followed by discussions on the report and the findings of the Human Rights Commission. Mr. Renaud emphasised the role of the Human Rights Commission and highlighted the need for Members of the National Assembly as well as the wider public, to gain a better understanding of the Commission’s mandate and how its services can be utilised.

Mr. Renaud further noted the possibility of organising follow-up engagements with Members, as well as holding broader discussions on various aspects relating to human rights. Mrs. Tirant-Gherardi also highlighted the importance of Members making better use of the Commission as a resource to strengthen their oversight role.

In response, Hon. Ernesta explained that during her tenure as Speaker, she has been working to strengthen sensitisation initiatives for both Members and the public through sessions, presentations, and discussions. She referred to the recent session with the Central Bank of Seychelles, which was held live and provided an opportunity for Members to gain a clearer understanding of matters relating to the institution’s annual report.

Hon. Ernesta also highlighted the Youth Budget Talk, which created a platform for young people to share their perspectives and empowered them to participate in critical national processes, such as the national budget.

She further noted that a similar engagement could be arranged with the Human Rights Commission to help Members better understand the Commission’s role and how they can effectively utilise it in the discharge of their parliamentary duties.
