On Friday 23rd February 2024, the National Assembly Service signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Seychelles (UniSey). This collaboration between the Legislature and an institute of higher education is the first of its kind and is aimed at fostering a diverse and expansive level of collaboration. The MOU was jointly signed by the Clerk of the National Assembly Mrs. Tania Isaac and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Seychelles Ms. Joëlle Perreau.

This agreement symbolizes a commitment to multifaceted cooperation, encompassing various aspects such as academic collaboration on research and teaching related to parliamentary affairs, and the organization of joint forums and activities aimed at mutual benefit. The main goals of this partnership include the free exchange of information between the institutions, and the creation of a shared platform for the education of students in parliamentary studies. It is envisaged that this platform will pave the way for young adults and other under-represented groups to enter the governmental and political sphere and contribute to the continuation of well-informed democratic practices and good governance.

Deputy Clerk Ms. Alexandria Faure

An important aspect of this collaboration is the benefit to Parliamentarians in their often-complex roles scrutinizing Government, legislating, debating issues of national importance, and representing the people of Seychelles. Through research efforts, Parliamentarians are exposed to broader perspectives and data, thus informing their work and improving the quality of debate in the House.

Registrar of UniSey Dr. Indra Persaud

Recognizing the significance of parliaments' expanding responsibilities in legislation, oversight, and representation, it becomes apparent that every citizen holds a crucial stake in the integrity of these institutions, including academic entities such as universities and other higher learning institutions.
