On Wednesday 22nd November 2023, the National Assembly of Seychelles commemorated International Men’s Day which is celebrated on the 19th of November. Following a blue ribbon ceremony earlier during the week, a series of talks and health checkups were coordinated and conducted for both Members of the National Assembly and Secretariat Staff.

Men's Day Activities

A presentation on Mental Health and Stress Management was given by Social Scientist Ms. Belmira Elizabeth. This interactive session involved discussions on the differences between mental health and mental illness, as well as the important distinction between positive and negative stress. Participants were able to ask questions and converse on the effects of social pressures and gender norms in Seychelles, especially on men.

Eye Screening

Throughout the day, a team from Vision Care consisting of Ms. Bryna Samedi, Ms. Charlotte Hoareau, Mr. Andre Stratonowitsch, and Mr. Aaryan Rawat, performed eye screenings and gave advice on general eye care. Alongside them was a team from AMSA Medical Centre, consisting of Dr. Kenneth Henriette and Ms. Lyn Vidot. The AMSA team provided a variety of medical checkup services such as blood pressure checks, blood sugar checks, BMI measurements, and personal consultations.

Men's Day Activities

A final presentation and interactive session was given by Dr. Henriette, focusing on Men’s Health. This session allowed for discussions on social factors influencing men’s health, the general aversion to medical help, the rise of prostate cancer, and importance of education regarding physical and mental health in Seychelles.

Health Screening

The activities were well received by the National Assembly, and participants left with a greater sense of understanding of the issues surrounding men’s health.
