The Women’s Parliamentary Caucus of the National Assembly wishes to express its sincerest support and sympathy for all persons impacted by the video that has been circulating on numerous media platforms over this previous weekend showing a man publicly committing acts of gender-based violence against a woman. We acknowledge the painful consequences of this incident for the woman in the video. It is the nation’s societal obligation to protect women who have suffered forms of physical abuse.

There is no question that the act of violence in the video is deplorable, however its consequences extend beyond the incident. The continued dissemination of this is reproachable and further worsens the impacts caused. The caucus remains painfully aware that the sharing of the video adds to the mental trauma and shame experienced by herself and her family in the long run.

It is a societal responsibility to uphold and protect women’s rights for the purpose of a safe and peaceful society devoid of this type of abuse. A collective effort is therefore needed to ensure that the nation is a sound and solid front against the abuse of women. Men especially should show active support to women and participate in the sensitization and awareness building on the topic. The fight on women’s rights is important to allow for the secure and sustainable social development of our country.

As Members of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus and the 7th Assembly, we express our solidarity and continued support to all women and families who are suffering from such acts of abuse and we pledge to keep working together for national solutions.
