On Saturday 2nd March, the Members of the Environmental Policy Implementation Committee (EPIC) of the National Assembly Service visited the Island Conversation Society (ICS) team on Silhouette Island. The visit formed part of EPIC’s aims to gain more knowledge and perspective regarding the management of mangrove areas in Seychelles.

EPIC Visiting Silhouette

The visit kicked off with a presentation from the ICS team on the conservation and mangrove rehabilitation work that they carry out on Silhouette, including an overview of the other islands ICS work on. With the assistance of Sharon, Ricky, Irma and Emma from ICS, the EPIC Members hiked to Anse Lascar where they had the chance to learn about various endemic plant species on Silhouette in the midst of the lush natural landscape.

At Anse Lascar everyone had the chance to plant red mangrove seedlings in the area and learn more about other mangrove areas on Silhouette island. To conclude the visit, the ICS team showed the EPIC Members the endemic plant nursery and further explained the initiatives taking place to ensure the controlled eradication of invasive plant species.

The EPIC and the National Assembly give sincere thanks to both ICS and Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa for their support. EPIC benefited greatly from the visit and the knowledge gained will be used in the management of the National Assembly’s own mangrove area, as well as aspiring projects for the future.
