The National Assembly, with the assistance of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) organized a two day workshop held from the 18th to the 19th May, 2015, at the parliamentary precinct. The workshop organized exclusively for media professionals was a capacity building opportunity for media professionals to gain better understanding of the nature of parliamentary work and techniques to provide stimulating coverage of parliamentary proceedings.

The workshop which convoked representatives of the local media houses, the Media Commission and staff of the Secretariat, was facilitated by Mr. Andres Lomp and Mr. Tim Fenton, two experts recommended by the IPU with considerable experience in the area of parliamentary reporting.

In his opening address, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon, Dr. Patrick Herminie reiterated that this workshop is a testimony of Parliament’s commitment to build an informed society. He emphasized that parliament recognizes and appreciates the media as the general public’s primary educator and that this workshop will help enhance parliamentary reporting and coverage.

The opening ceremony was attended by several Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of the media and media commission. During their time in Seychelles, Mr. Fenton and Mr. Lomp also met with the Hon. Speaker, Dr. Patrick Herminie, and the National Assembly’s media committee to discuss the needs of the media and those of the parliamentary administration with the aim of enhancing relations between the media and Parliament.
