ACHPR REPRESENTATIVES MEET WITH THE SPEAKER AND PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE OF CHAIRPERSONS

The Parliamentary Committee of Chairpersons with the ACHPR RepresentativesA delegation on a promotion mission from the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) met with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Dr. Patrick Herminie, and the parliamentary committee of Chairpersons this Friday morning.

In his exchanges with the Speaker, the delegation head, Commissioner Yeung Kam John Yeung Sik Yuen, commended the Seychelles on its efforts in upholding fundamental human rights and was particularly impressed with the management of prisons in the country.

Following the courtesy call, the mission discussed its findings with the parliamentary committee. The delegation recommended that the National Human Rights Commission, on which Parliament is represented, endeavour to raise awareness on human rights issues through effective communication, education and outreach. Additionally, they reiterated the necessity for increased capacity building and exposure to international best practices. Parliamentarians also had the opportunity to learn more about the Commission’s work methodology and the Addis Ababa Roadmap.

The Speaker conveyed his appreciation for ACHPR’s support to the Seychelles in the recent past and found today’s deliberations most insightful and productive. On this occasion, the National Assembly equally reaffirmed its full commitment to continually support the protection of human rights.
