H.E. The Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Patrick Herminie pronouncing opening remarks The National Assembly, with the assistance of the Inter-Parliamentary Union organized a two day conference held from the 16th to the 17th July, 2014, at the STC Conference Room, to reinvigorate and strengthen the relationship between the two institutions. The workshop which convoked members of the National Assembly, staff of the Secretariat and representatives of the local media houses and the Media Commission, was facilitated by Mr. Japhet Muthomi and Ms Claire Doole. Also in attendance were the Minister for Foreign Affairs, foreign dignitaries and senior government officials.

In his opening address, Hon, Dr. Patrick Herminie Distinguished guests present at the opening ceremony of the workshop on the Parliament and the Mediareiterated the decisive role of the media in furthering democratic good governance through the shaping of public opinion on the work of the elected members and the need for the institution to independently transmit its proceedings through a broadcasting unit thereby effectively maintaining the dignity of the House. During the ensuing debates, the training of parliamentary reporters was underscored due to the highly technical nature of such specialist reporting and the fostering of better understanding between the institutions.

The themes of the presentations by the coordinators and participants focused primarily on the National Assembly’s role and its communication strategy, the use of social media, building relations and communicating with the traditional media and ethical, as well as balanced reporting by the latter.
