SPEAKERS OF PARLIAMENTS OF AFRICA AGREE TO SET UP PARMANENT LEGISLATIVE SUMMIT FOR AFRICA

The National Assembly of Seychelles to Officially Join the Pan-African Parliament in 2014

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Dr. Patrick Herminie, last week, attended a special meeting of African Speakers held in Abuja, Nigeria to institutionalize a Legislative Summit for Africa.

The aim of the Summit is to create a platform for regular interaction and exchange of ideas at the continental level between parliamentarians on one-hand, and other key government actors on the other. These include civil society groups, academia, traditional leaders, students, religious leaders, among others. This will permit a wider range of stakeholders to partake in the making of decisions affecting Africa.

The legislative summit will therefore compliment activities of existing bodies like the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association or the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) by widening and enhancing the scope of interaction amongst parliamentarians and governance actors through an agreed collaborative framework. It is yet to be agreed whether the new summit will function on its own or under the auspices of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) which is the legislative branch of the African Union. The first legislative summit was officially launched by the President of Nigeria, Mr. Goodluck Jonathan.
