PRESIDENT MICHEL’S STATE OF THE NATION ADDRESS REITERATES THE IMPORTANCE OF PEOPLE-CENTERED DECISION-MAKING

The President of the Republic H.E. Mr. James Alix Michel delivering his addressThe President of the Republic of Seychelles, H.E. Mr. James Alix Michel delivered the State of the Nation Address (SONA) before the National Assembly on Thursday 26th February, 2015.

In his address yesterday evening, the President expressed his great satisfaction at the level of progress that Seychelles has achieved over the years, evidenced by the propitious performance of national economic indicators. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the development of the tourism and fisheries sectors: the country’s main economic powerhouses. He also cautioned that fiscal discipline is mandatory if the country is to reduce its overall debt to 50% of the Gross National Product by 2018. It is noteworthy that US$30M of the national debt will soon be transferred to a fund for marine protection under the Debt-For-Climate Change Adaptation Initiative. TThe President of the Republic welcomed by the Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Dr. Patrick Herminiehe President also underscored the need for reforms to the tax administration system to curb tax avoidance and announced the introduction of the SME Incentive Act to support and incite Seychellois entrepreneurship.

THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY RECEIVES A GENEROUS DONATION FROM THE SEYCHELLES CHINA FRIENDSHIP AND BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

The Clerk receiving the donation from Dr. ToThe National Assembly is the fortunate beneficiary of twelve Lenovo laptop computers donated by the Seychelles China Friendship and Business Association.

Dr. Sidney To, Acting Head of the Seychelles Consulate General in Shanghai, presented the donation to the Ag. Clerk of the National Assembly, Ms. Shelda Commettant, during a short ceremony at the National Assembly on Thursday 5th February, 2015.

THE SPEAKER TO CALL SPECIAL SITTING TO APPROVE THE APPOINTMENT OF FOUR NEW CABINET MINISTERS

The Speaker, Hon. Dr. Patrick Herminie has called a special sitting of the National Assembly on Friday 30th January, 2015 to vote on motions to approve the appointment by the President, Mr. James Michel of Mr. Wallace Jude Keith Cosgrow, Mr. Etienne Didier Cesar Dogley, Mr. Michael Michel Jean Benstrong and Mr. Charles Robert Bastienne as Ministers. This is in line with Order 16 of the Standing Order and Article 69 (2) of the Constitution.

 

THE SPEAKER RETURNS FROM EAST EUROPEAN VISIT

The Speaker with the Chair Council RussiaThe Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Dr. Patrick Herminie returned to the country from a two-leg official visit to the Russian Federation and the Republic of Slovakia. The visits were made on invitations of Mrs. Valentina Matviyanko, the Chairperson of the Federal Council which is the Upper House of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, and Mr. Peter Pellegrini, the Speaker of the National Council of Slovakia, respectively.
